Product description
SS-31 (Elamipretide; MTP-131) is a synthetic cell-permeable tetrapeptide developed by Hazel Szeto and Peter Schiller, featuring an alternating aromatic–cationic residue pattern — D-Arg-Dmt-Lys-Phe-NH₂ — where Dmt denotes 2′,6′-dimethyltyrosine. This motif enables selective accumulation at the inner mitochondrial membrane through electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions with cardiolipin (CL), an anionic phospholipid essential to electron transport chain organisation. SS-31 is a widely used tool compound in mitochondrial biology research for investigating cristae architecture, respiratory complex dynamics, and reactive oxygen species production.
How to use it
Each vial arrives as lyophilized (freeze-dried) powder and must be reconstituted with bacteriostatic water before use in a research setting. Add the water slowly down the inside wall of the vial, then swirl gently until clear — never shake. Once reconstituted, keep it refrigerated and use within 28 days.
Open the step-by-step reconstitution guideStorage & stability
Sealed lyophilized vials are stable at ambient temperatures for 30 days and indefinitely at −20°C. After reconstitution, refrigerate at 2–8°C in the original vial and use within 28 days. Keep the vial out of direct light and avoid repeated temperature swings and agitation.
Quality & testing
Quality and purity tests are performed on random batches, covering identity (mass spec), purity (HPLC) and endotoxin results.

About SS-31
Supplied in a premium lyophilized (freeze-dried) powder form, the 50mg format ensures enhanced flexibility for large-scale experiments, precise measurement, and consistent reconstitution under strict laboratory conditions. This format is highly suitable for extended protocols and multi-phase studies. Accurate peptide calculations during reconstitution help maintain consistent molarity across batches, ensuring reproducibility in in-vitro research models.
What distinguishes SS-31 in modern research is its ability to selectively target mitochondrial structures, particularly cardiolipin-rich membranes. This allows researchers to investigate how localized peptide activity influences mitochondrial stability, energy efficiency, and cellular resilience without broadly affecting other cellular systems. This targeted approach provides deeper insight into mitochondrial biology and energy regulation.
FAQ
Common questions
Each vial contains lyophilized peptide, sealed under vacuum with a butyl stopper and aluminum crimp cap. Bacteriostatic water is sold separately.
Store the sealed vial at 2–8°C in a dark environment. After reconstitution, keep refrigerated and use within 28 days.
Yes — every batch ships with a signed COA showing HPLC purity, mass spec confirmation, and endotoxin results. Download the sample COA above.
Larger vials offer the same peptide at a lower per-mg cost. Reconstitution volume scales linearly with size.
